Barclays Group is one of the largest financial institutions in the United Kingdom. The bank continuously battles with Lloyds Banking Group to be the second-largest bank in the United Kingdom in terms of revenue, while no bank in the country stands a chance to compete with HSBC. In 2023, Barclays ranked second in the UK by total assets, after HSBC. In terms of market capitalization, however, Barclays ranked third, behind HSBC and Lloyds.

The history of Barclays Bank

The history of Barclays Bank can be traced back to 1690, when the business of goldsmith bankers was established by Thomas Gould in London. It changed the name to Barclays in 1736, and further secured its position on the banking market of London in 1896, when several banks in the capital and the English provinces united under the banner of "Barclays and Co.". The bank developed greatly over time. In 2022, it was among the largest banks in Europe by assets, and it employed more than 45,000 people in the UK. At the end of 2023, Barclays had a market capital value of approximately 29.81 billion British pounds.

Are customers satisfied with Barclays?

 Customer satisfaction with the current account services provided by Barclays Bank was 74 percent in August 2023. It placed Barclays Bank well behind the competition of smaller challenger banks, such as Starling and Monzo Bank. In the third quarter of 2023 alone, Barclays Bank lost around 24,000 accounts, with customers using the "current account switch service" offered by Payments Council, which made changing banks easier, to finalize their decision.
